Visit to Plymouth

I am the South-West representative for the National Federation of Student Atheist, Humanist and Secularist Societies (AHS).  Part of my role is to keep regional societies engaged with the AHS and to organise socials and cooperation regionally.  However, Bristol AASS is the only active society in the South-West, so it's not too hard to organise things at the moment!

Bristol AASS has been in contact with Alex Charlton for a while.  He is a Univeristy of Plymouth undergraduate, blogger for Young Freethought and very interested in setting up a society at the University!  Olly, Greg, Semy and I  took a road-trip down to Plymouth to visit him and we discussed the mechanics of running an atheist society over lunch.  He had a lot of his own ideas, having drafted a logo and naming the society University of Plymouth Atheist Society (UPAS).  We gave our input with the sorts of events he could hold and the sorts of people he could invite to speak at his society.  In the glorious sunshine we headed out to Plymouth Hoe to enjoy the stiff sea breeze, partially stifled by the truck festival honking away on Hoe Road.

We were also to meet Sid Remmer, leader of the Plymouth Humanists, but he was caught up in an unplanned work engagement.  He apologised, and said he hoped to meet us in future to discuss issues facing Plymouth Humanists including Protest the Pope, council prayers and a new Scientology centre (boooo!).

We wish both Alex and Sid success with their societies in Plymouth.
